South Pennine Archaeology Group

With a local, qualified archaeologist we have access to specialist services including drone surveys and magnetometry. Young people of 15+ years who are looking to follow a career in archaeology are welcome. We try not to take ourselves too seriously, indeed several of us were drawn to the subject by the sadly missed Time Team series. New members who want to join our field walks, undertake research or get their hands dirty in the field are encouraged to email to learn more.

What we do:

In these challenging times, we, are having to re-think our strategy. Digs, communal research and field walks are out but archaeology is not just about huge discoveries, it’s about a lot of small things creating a much bigger picture. A piece of a stoneware jar found on the site of an old midden (rubbish tip) has led us to research a botanical brewery in Constablee, a piece of clay pipe appears to be Irish but the true story is quite different and did you know that St John’s Church in Crawshawbooth is built on an old mill lodge (reservoir)? Join us on our quest to learn more, we’re particularly keen to involve young people looking for a career in archaeology. Are you ready to be a local champion in your small area of the county?

After the lockdown we'll be out there on digs, field walks and visits. We'll be researching in libraries and archives but for now, online research and questioning our local environment as we take our daily exercise is the challenge.
