Read Easy Preston

Read Easy Preston is a legally independent local organisation, affiliated to Read Easy UK (Registered charity no. 1151288). We were formed in March 2021 and are 100% volunteer-run.

Our mission is to advance the reading skills of adults in the Preston area (including South Ribble, Chorley and parts of Wyre) where there are currently 25,000 adults who cannot read or can barely read. Learning to read improves confidence, mental health and wellbeing, social lives and employment prospects.

What we do:

We train volunteer Reading Coaches and pair them with an adult who wants to improve their reading skills. The pair meet twice a week at a private space in a public place, such as a library (or can meet online, as has been the case during the Covid restrictions). They work through a structured, phonics-based reading programme at the pace of the learner. There is no pressure, no exams and ideally the learner stick with the same coach throughout to receive a personal, friendly positive reading experience. Our volunteers are all passionate about spreading the joy of reading and improving the lives of others.

Activities:

Adults who want to learn to read can receive free, one-to-one reading coaching with a trained volunteer, twice weekly for 30 minutes, at a time to suit the pair.
